Second Liebster nomination!

Firstly, my apologies for being a little delayed with this post. A broken laptop puts a major damper on my blogging schedule. Nevertheless, if you think I was excited about my first nomination, you can imagine that I am ecstatic about the second. I discovered Namreen's blog "Life and times of the fireflies" recently and I was pleasantly surprised. (Thought provoking stuff I tell you but more on that at a later stage). Naturally being nominated by such an awesome blogger is a major compliment and honour.

Picture all the way from Cape Town: beautiful!

Here are the questions she poses:

  1. What inspired you to start blogging?
Emotionally, I was going through a really difficult time and I needed something to build my confidence and self esteem back up. I had been thinking of blogging for the longest time and it seemed like a good time to start.

2. Best childhood memory?

Going shopping with my parents was definitely always magical for me; that and being able to take ten books from our local library. It seemed like the coolest thing to me. (Nerd alert)

3. What is your favourite book?

I am such an avid reader that there is just too many good ones to pick one. I do, however want to reread a few now that I am older.

4.What is your ideal holiday destination?

This might seem a bit stiff but I would love to take my son to London or go to New York with my friends.

5. Your favourite tv programme is?

I adore the Carrie Diaries and anything CSI related. I also love reality tv and almost everything on Style Network.

6. What is your favourite blog post you have written?

A post called The pursuit of awesome.

7. Horror? Comedy? Thriller? Action? Romcom?
I love romantic comedies but I find myself wanting to watch more thrillers lately.

8. What is your favourite thing to be blog about?
I love blogging about fashion especially street and celebrity style ,but I blog about whatever comes to mind now. No restrictions.

9. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I am way too hard on myself and I almost never take credit for the things I do right. And I want thicker calves please!

10. What is your favourite fragrance?

I have a new favourite, it is Estee Lauder's Modern Muse

Thank your for nominating me Namu. Guys make sure you check out her blog www.namusnarratives.blogspot.com

Thank you for taking the time to read!

Nominated for a Liebster Award

To be frank, when Naeemah from the Jam Jar blog nominated me for a Liebster award I had no idea what it was. Granted, I have only been blogging for six months. However, as soon as I started doing some research on the matter I realised what a massive compliment it was. Simply put, the Liebster award is an award given to up and coming (and I imagine innovative) bloggers. The aim is to create awareness of these blogs and to give the bloggers some well deserved exposure. I was nominated with ten other bloggers of her choice (the rule is that you have to have less than 200 followers). You then answer a set of questions, nominate your own candidates and relate questions to them. It is like one big blogger group hug :-)

Here are the questions Naeemah posed

1. While you are writing a blog post, which position are you most comfortable in?
I tend to fall asleep very quickly when I am not supposed to so I do all my posts sitting up right.

2. What do you listen to while blogging?
Nothing, I get distracted easily so I prefer absolute silence. There's enough noises in my head already.

3. Which beauty item is your holy grail?
I fell in love with mascara in high school, although at the time I had a very cheap version. I love a good foundation too.

4. What is you favourite tv show?
The Carrie Diaries and my guilty pleasure is anything on the E channel or Style Network.

5. If you had to pick between a muffin and a cupcake, which one would you take?
CUPCAKE! I would put icing and sprinkles on that muffin and convince it to be a cupcake :-)

6. How many times have you burned yourself with a hot styling tool?
Only a few times this year. Lets hope for even less next year.

7. If you could be any Disney character, which one would you be and why?
Cinderella. I imagine she doesn't have a clothing (or anything) budget and I am a total sucker for a happy ending. Lesson: lying and scheming never works out!

8. Horror, comedy, action, thriller, romcom?
I have always been a romcom kind of lady but lately I find myself gravitating towards thrillers.

9. Fill in the missing words: I would rather                    than                   ?
I would rather wrestle an alligator than lose a family member.

10. If you could have anything made in your honour what would it be?
I would love a stunning pair of shoes but I would settle for a mascara made in my honour.

11. Coca- cola or Pepsi?
      Coke on the rocks :-)

I have really enjoyed doing this post so a huge thank you to Naeemah for finding me cool enough to nominate me. I was nominated a second time and will do a post on that soon. As for me nominating other bloggers, I think choosing 11 would not be fair seeing that I read so many amazing blogs. Therefore I have decided that in my next post I will list all the blogs I enjoy reading and let you guys decide for yourself. I hope you enjoyed this little slice of my world....

The tattoo diaries

I have been coveting a tattoo since I was in high school but somehow never got around to getting one. Perhaps it was fear, or perhaps it just wasn't meant to be. Long story short, I finally took the plunge recently after a good friend set it up for me. And I can tell you, I am in love! There is something so liberating about getting a tattoo especially if it really has significant meaning to you. I really wanted something small and something that I wouldn't regret......

This was the initial inspiration

I wanted to get a mash up of two things that mean a lot to me. My darling son XYLON and fashion.

This is how it all got started....

Almost done....

And this is the beautiful end result. I have had it for almost a week and I couldn't be happier. I am really happy that I waited till now. Back then I probably would have gotten something ridiculous. I have too mention that the tattoo artist was extremely professional and as you can see that he does a pretty good job. Feel free to ask me any questions about the process if you have, in the meantime, have a lovely day...

SINGLE- it's not a dirty word

Why are you single? Its the one question I have come to resent over the past few years. How do you answer that without making the asker think: "hmm well something must be wrong with you then"? How do you conjure up an answer that doesn't cue sympathy and an immediate search for people that would be "perfect for you"? Not surprisingly, people readily assume that when you are single, you are unhappy. While that might be the case in most scenarios; it is not always the truth and I am living proof of that.

Don't get me wrong, I love absolutely everything about the opposite sex. How their smell can linger on our clothes for days. Their ability to remain completely calm when there's a mouse in the house and their adorable determination to fix things that appear broken. However, I don't think fear is a valid reason to date someone. Fear that people might perceive you as a social leper. Fear that you cant be complete on your own or fear of being left out of "couples only" activities. In my opinion, settling for someone who does not deserve you is way worse than being single. Contrary to popular belief, single doesn't always equal lonely. That stigma is forcing so many people to begin and stay in relationships for all the wrong reasons.

I say, if you are happy single, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Learning to love and value yourself will ultimately make your future partners  aware of your worth. AMEN TO THAT!

Remember you are special

To new beginnings-welcome to my fellow cool kids

Welcome to my very first blog post!

It promises to be absolutely nothing fancy except me sharing my love for fashion of all kinds, stylish regular people and life in general. Why am I even reading this you may wonder? Trust me I have no prior experience in blogging and my palms are very sweaty as I am typing this. Nerves you see, but the wonderful kind of nerves. The nerves of knowing that this is exactly what I am supposed to be doing. I have thought long and hard and I have come to the realisation that even if no-one reads this blog, I will still be deliriously happy just writing. Ok so enough of the Oprah epiphany moments. Over the course of this blog you will find me rambling on about how obsessed I am with certain blogs. I draw an immense amount of  inspiration from various blogs ranging from international blogs to local gems. My blog posts will include look posts from myself on but mostly snippets of fabulosity I encounter on a day to day basis: anywhere and everywhere. I feel these are the people that are most creative when it comes to fashion. People with their own unique grasp on style; even on a tight budget. So....here is to the first of many rad blog posts and may it inspire you to search for and embrace your inner cool kid.

Till later....
Lauren

Life begins at...Sobriety?

That seems to be the case for me. Let me start by saying, had it not been for a near death experience, I would certainly not be writing this...
