Second Liebster nomination!

Firstly, my apologies for being a little delayed with this post. A broken laptop puts a major damper on my blogging schedule. Nevertheless, if you think I was excited about my first nomination, you can imagine that I am ecstatic about the second. I discovered Namreen's blog "Life and times of the fireflies" recently and I was pleasantly surprised. (Thought provoking stuff I tell you but more on that at a later stage). Naturally being nominated by such an awesome blogger is a major compliment and honour.

Picture all the way from Cape Town: beautiful!

Here are the questions she poses:

  1. What inspired you to start blogging?
Emotionally, I was going through a really difficult time and I needed something to build my confidence and self esteem back up. I had been thinking of blogging for the longest time and it seemed like a good time to start.

2. Best childhood memory?

Going shopping with my parents was definitely always magical for me; that and being able to take ten books from our local library. It seemed like the coolest thing to me. (Nerd alert)

3. What is your favourite book?

I am such an avid reader that there is just too many good ones to pick one. I do, however want to reread a few now that I am older.

4.What is your ideal holiday destination?

This might seem a bit stiff but I would love to take my son to London or go to New York with my friends.

5. Your favourite tv programme is?

I adore the Carrie Diaries and anything CSI related. I also love reality tv and almost everything on Style Network.

6. What is your favourite blog post you have written?

A post called The pursuit of awesome.

7. Horror? Comedy? Thriller? Action? Romcom?
I love romantic comedies but I find myself wanting to watch more thrillers lately.

8. What is your favourite thing to be blog about?
I love blogging about fashion especially street and celebrity style ,but I blog about whatever comes to mind now. No restrictions.

9. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I am way too hard on myself and I almost never take credit for the things I do right. And I want thicker calves please!

10. What is your favourite fragrance?

I have a new favourite, it is Estee Lauder's Modern Muse

Thank your for nominating me Namu. Guys make sure you check out her blog

Thank you for taking the time to read!

Nominated for a Liebster Award

To be frank, when Naeemah from the Jam Jar blog nominated me for a Liebster award I had no idea what it was. Granted, I have only been blogging for six months. However, as soon as I started doing some research on the matter I realised what a massive compliment it was. Simply put, the Liebster award is an award given to up and coming (and I imagine innovative) bloggers. The aim is to create awareness of these blogs and to give the bloggers some well deserved exposure. I was nominated with ten other bloggers of her choice (the rule is that you have to have less than 200 followers). You then answer a set of questions, nominate your own candidates and relate questions to them. It is like one big blogger group hug :-)

Here are the questions Naeemah posed

1. While you are writing a blog post, which position are you most comfortable in?
I tend to fall asleep very quickly when I am not supposed to so I do all my posts sitting up right.

2. What do you listen to while blogging?
Nothing, I get distracted easily so I prefer absolute silence. There's enough noises in my head already.

3. Which beauty item is your holy grail?
I fell in love with mascara in high school, although at the time I had a very cheap version. I love a good foundation too.

4. What is you favourite tv show?
The Carrie Diaries and my guilty pleasure is anything on the E channel or Style Network.

5. If you had to pick between a muffin and a cupcake, which one would you take?
CUPCAKE! I would put icing and sprinkles on that muffin and convince it to be a cupcake :-)

6. How many times have you burned yourself with a hot styling tool?
Only a few times this year. Lets hope for even less next year.

7. If you could be any Disney character, which one would you be and why?
Cinderella. I imagine she doesn't have a clothing (or anything) budget and I am a total sucker for a happy ending. Lesson: lying and scheming never works out!

8. Horror, comedy, action, thriller, romcom?
I have always been a romcom kind of lady but lately I find myself gravitating towards thrillers.

9. Fill in the missing words: I would rather                    than                   ?
I would rather wrestle an alligator than lose a family member.

10. If you could have anything made in your honour what would it be?
I would love a stunning pair of shoes but I would settle for a mascara made in my honour.

11. Coca- cola or Pepsi?
      Coke on the rocks :-)

I have really enjoyed doing this post so a huge thank you to Naeemah for finding me cool enough to nominate me. I was nominated a second time and will do a post on that soon. As for me nominating other bloggers, I think choosing 11 would not be fair seeing that I read so many amazing blogs. Therefore I have decided that in my next post I will list all the blogs I enjoy reading and let you guys decide for yourself. I hope you enjoyed this little slice of my world....

Mom of all trades

Being a mom is simultaneously the most rewarding and most exhausting thing any woman can experience. Naturally having a baby can wreak havoc on your style and appearance. I wont lie, there were many days I used a beanie to cover up my "soolkous" and avoided going out all together because I couldn't summon the energy to put on a decent outfit.

But a fashionista at heart cannot be tamed. I found that, the more I made an effort to spruce up my appearance, the happier I became. As my self esteem grew, so did my patience and willingness to find a few minor tips and tricks to remain stylish. Provided, between the expenses of having a growing baby and dealing with a whole new body type, not much money or willpower is left for anything fashion related.

Which is why I have decided to compile a little list of the things that got me through my "most unstylish period ever". Now don't get me wrong, I don't consider myself an expert and I still spend the odd day on sweatpants and slippers. But in an attempt to regain my former lust for fashion I have figured a few life (and dignity) savers along the way.

1. Do spend enough money on flats
And I am not talking about regular flats. OH NO! I mean the kind of flats you would not mind showing off to your friends or going to lunch date in. I love colours and prints. If your flats are eye catching and pretty, many of your other sins become less noticeable.

2. Boyfriend jeans are both stylish and comfortable
It took me ages to find a flattering pair and now I could practically live in them. You can pair them with anything from a plain t-shirt for a play date or a sheer blouse on date night. And even better; they look awesome with flats too.

3. Ditch the ugly nappy bag
I always used to carry around too many things "just in case" my son needed something. As your baby gets older you get to travel with less baggage because you have figured out what you might need and what not. I love colour block shoppers. They are big enough to carry all you necessities , but also stylish so you don't have to walk around hiding your bag from hell.

4. Limit your accessories
It might be tempting to pile on bracelets or statement neckpieces, but I know from experience that after carrying a baby around for a bit they only become a great source of irritation. More often than not the baby or toddler starts to pull at them and you have to remove them anyway. I find that stud earrings, cuffs and watches are much easier to wear on days you spend with the little one. There is such a variety in stores that you don't have to worry about looking drab.

5. Wear decent (if not great) underwear
I am ashamed to say that underwear is always dead last on my list of worries. Needless to say, I have spent countless  days fussing over bra straps and unflattering panty lines. This can really ruin ones day and no one needs a boob popping out while running around after your baby. I suggest comfortable but stable and feel- good underwear. Lace and frills though, is probably not a good idea.

How do you spruce up your outfits when on mommy duty? I would love to know seeing that I am also still learning! Do keep in touch and thank you in advance for your comments.

Welcome BAGgage

I have never been too fond of bags. Up until last year I found choosing the perfect one, matching it to the rest of my out or saving up for that investment bag completely irrelevant. I am not exactly sure how the change come about, but I suddenly found myself looking for and buying new bags. I have realised just how much a bag can make or break an outfit. There is a certain way I carry myself when I have a new bag or a bag I am proud to show off. Now I'm not saying I am ready to invest a ton of money into designer bags but I have found a lot of cheaper bags can be just as stunning. I have compiled some pictures of bags I adore. I have already started looking for similar ones and will be sharing my purchases very soon.

Do you have a favourite among these?

The tattoo diaries

I have been coveting a tattoo since I was in high school but somehow never got around to getting one. Perhaps it was fear, or perhaps it just wasn't meant to be. Long story short, I finally took the plunge recently after a good friend set it up for me. And I can tell you, I am in love! There is something so liberating about getting a tattoo especially if it really has significant meaning to you. I really wanted something small and something that I wouldn't regret......

This was the initial inspiration

I wanted to get a mash up of two things that mean a lot to me. My darling son XYLON and fashion.

This is how it all got started....

Almost done....
And this is the beautiful end result. I have had it for almost a week and I couldn't be happier. I am really happy that I waited till now. Back then I probably would have gotten something ridiculous. I have too mention that the tattoo artist was extremely professional and as you can see that he does a pretty good job. Feel free to ask me any questions about the process if you have, in the meantime, have a lovely day...

SINGLE- it's not a dirty word

Why are you single? Its the one question I have come to resent over the past few years. How do you answer that without making the asker think: "hmm well something must be wrong with you then"? How do you conjure up an answer that doesn't cue sympathy and an immediate search for people that would be "perfect for you"? Not surprisingly, people readily assume that when you are single, you are unhappy. While that might be the case in most scenarios; it is not always the truth and I am living proof of that.

Don't get me wrong, I love absolutely everything about the opposite sex. How their smell can linger on our clothes for days. Their ability to remain completely calm when there's a mouse in the house and their adorable determination to fix things that appear broken. However, I don't think fear is a valid reason to date someone. Fear that people might perceive you as a social leper. Fear that you cant be complete on your own or fear of being left out of "couples only" activities. In my opinion, settling for someone who does not deserve you is way worse than being single. Contrary to popular belief, single doesn't always equal lonely. That stigma is forcing so many people to begin and stay in relationships for all the wrong reasons.

I say, if you are happy single, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Learning to love and value yourself will ultimately make your future partners  aware of your worth. AMEN TO THAT!

Remember you are special

The pursuit of awesome

I have never been the cool girl. Not in school and certainly not thereafter! Too many people considered me to be either to be too different (and by that I mean weird) or too full of shit. As much as I like people (well most people) and socialising, I have always been more of a loner.

I constantly had my head up in the clouds daydreaming about fashion and music. Early on in my life I made an extreme effort to find out anything and everything I could about haute couture (high fashion) and contemporary rock music among other genres. To be honest, these are not exactly conversation starters when you're a teen. As you can I imagine, the more my love for fashion and music grew, the more alienated I became from my peers. I lost extremely good friends while trying to discover myself. My life story aside: its so easy to get sucked into the mundane routine of trying to fit in.

We all know how cruel and harsh people can be if you so much as dare to think differently. (Think back to a time you were scrutinized for wandering a little to far outside the set boundaries). How much are you really gaining from fitting in? Is other people's acceptance really going to alter your life that drastically or can you rely on yourself to feel awesome? I say you sure as hell can do just that! Yes, being liked others is an important part of life but how much is it really worth if you have to deconstruct your whole personality and masquerade around pretending to be authentic? Over the years I have come to realise something very important. Unless you are getting paid to care what others think, I see no reason why you should.

All that matters is that you like yourself. As simple as that sounds, I don't know a lot of people who can admit that they genuinely like themselves. So I say, go ahead and dress up like Gaga if that's your thing or start collecting stamps for all I care. Do whatever the hell it is that makes your heart race and your knees shake. Do it even when the world has something negative to say. The pursuit of awesomeness starts with liking yourself for who you are and the rest will follow.

And so I pose to you this challenge: when you're done reading this, take a piece of paper and make a list of  all the reasons why you are awesome (it doesn't have to be anything colossal). Trust me this will make a huge difference in your life. Good luck in your pursuit of finding your inner awesome.

Thank you for reading

To new beginnings-welcome to my fellow cool kids

Welcome to my very first blog post!

It promises to be absolutely nothing fancy except me sharing my love for fashion of all kinds, stylish regular people and life in general. Why am I even reading this you may wonder? Trust me I have no prior experience in blogging and my palms are very sweaty as I am typing this. Nerves you see, but the wonderful kind of nerves. The nerves of knowing that this is exactly what I am supposed to be doing. I have thought long and hard and I have come to the realisation that even if no-one reads this blog, I will still be deliriously happy just writing. Ok so enough of the Oprah epiphany moments. Over the course of this blog you will find me rambling on about how obsessed I am with certain blogs. I draw an immense amount of  inspiration from various blogs ranging from international blogs to local gems. My blog posts will include look posts from myself on but mostly snippets of fabulosity I encounter on a day to day basis: anywhere and everywhere. I feel these are the people that are most creative when it comes to fashion. People with their own unique grasp on style; even on a tight budget. is to the first of many rad blog posts and may it inspire you to search for and embrace your inner cool kid.

Till later....
